Al-Qaeda attack killed a military commander and three soldiers in Abyan on Thursday, security officials told the press.

Commander Abdul Latif al-Sayyid and three soldiers from the Security Belt Forces, loyal to the Southern Transitional Council, were killed by an explosion caused by a roadside bomb detonated while their convoy was in Moudiya district.

Later the same day, Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP) claimed responsibility for the blast. AQAP militants are active in Abyan and regularly carry out ambushes against the southern forces.

Sayyid, who led several major offensives against extremists, had survived several attempts to kill him ordered by al-Qaeda.

Last week, the southern soldiers managed to arrest two AQAP leaders after conducting raids on their hideouts in Wadi Awmran of Moudiya district as part of a large-scale anti-terror operation in the province.
