 Southern Armed Forces launched a large-scale military operation in Abyan on Sunday to hunt down terrorists and to cleanse the governorate of remaining Al-Qaeda militants.

The Head of the Research and Decision Support Center of the Southern Transitional Council, Lutfi Shatara revealed in a statement that the southern soldiers managed to arrest two senior leaders of Al-Qaeda on the first day of the anti-terror operation following raids on their hideouts in Abyan's Moudiya district.

Shatara reiterated that the Southern Transitional Council is a true partner for maintaining security and stability, and combating terrorism in the region.

The operation aims mainly to cleanse Abyan of terrorist organizations, and remove the threat of Houthi complicity with Al Qaeda, in addition to secure the capital Aden, protect the roads between governorates, and detect and prevent contraband operations, including illicit drugs and weapons smuggling across the coast of Abyan.
