The United Nations on Monday handed over a vessel that will take on board oil from a decaying tanker FSO Safer in the Red Sea off war-torn Yemen, an operation aimed at averting an environmental catastrophe.

A UN-owned ship arrived off war-torn Yemen on Sunday for a risky operation to pump more than a million barrels of oil from a decaying tanker and prevent a catastrophic spill.

The Safer was constructed as a supertanker in 1976 and converted later into a floating storage and offloading facility for oil.
