A 200FT deep “Well of Hell” in Yemen has been investigated for the first time ever, as terrified locals fear it may be home to evil spirits.
A brave team of cave divers has made what is believed to be the first voyage down the 100-meter-wide hole in the desert of the eastern province of Al-Mahra.
“There were snakes, but they will not bother you unless you bother them,” Mohammed al-Kindi, a professor of geology at the German University of Technology in Oman, told AFP.
Kindi was among eight experienced cavemen who took the plunge into the cave last week, while two colleagues remained at the top.
Footage showed hollow formations and gray and lime-green hollow beads, formed by dripping water.
“The passion drove us to do this, and we felt that this is something that will reveal a new wonder and part of Yemeni history,” said Kindi, who also owns a mining and petroleum consulting firm.
“We collected samples of water, rocks, soil and some dead animals, but have not yet had them analyzed.
