The freedom of expression and assembly are the foundations of a healthy political life, and the most basic guarantees of equal citizenship, said the United Nations Special Envoy to Yemen Martin Griffiths on this year’s World Press Freedom Day.

“The conflict in Yemen has created an increasingly repressive environment for the media. And all parties have an obligation to protect journalists and uphold freedom of the press,” said Mr. Griffiths in his briefing to the Security Council in May 2020.

“I am extremely concerned about the shrinking space of press freedom including threats to journalists’ physical security and to their families, detention, death sentences against journalists and even worse, assassinations. I will continue to urge the parties to respect and protect press freedom.”
