The European Union (EU) Saturday welcomed the release of detainees by the Yemeni parties on Thursday and Friday as a "crucial step in the implementation of the 2018 Stockholm Agreement".

"It is also a reminder that progress can still be made through negotiation and compromise," Nabila Massrali, EU spokesperson for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, in a statement tonight.

The EU commended the work carried out by the International Committee of the Red Cross as well as the UN Special Envoy Martin Griffiths and his office for facilitating the release of the detainees and their reunification with their families.

The EU also welcomed the Yemeni parties' commitment to continue negotiations on the Prisoner Exchange Agreement.

"This spirit of conciliation should now translate into an overall political solution of the conflict in Yemen. The finalisation of the UN-led Joint Declaration and the implementation of the Riyadh Agreement are crucial cornerstones in this regard," added the statement.
