Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) Secretary-General Dr. Nayef Al-Hajraf on Thursday welcomed Yemeni warring parties' release of hundreds of prisoners of war in implementation of a deal to set free 1,081 conflict-related prisoners.

This is a good step forward towards the execution of the UN-brokered Stockholm deal to de-escalate tensions and pave the way for a peaceful solution to the five and a half-year-old conflict, said Al-Hajraf in a press statement.

The GCC chief hailed the sincere efforts exerted by the International Committee of the Red Cross -- which supervises implementation of the prisoner swab deal -- Yemeni government, and the Saudi-led Arab coalition to ensure the safe release of prisoners and detainees.
