 President of the Southern Transitional Council and Supreme Commander of the Southern Armed Forces, Aidroos Qassem al-Zubaidi met in his office in Aden on Thursday, with Marwan Ezzat Al-Ali, the advisor of the UN special envoy for Yemen, Martin Griffiths.

During the meeting, al-Zubaidi reviewed the practical steps taken by the STC to implement the Riyadh Agreement and the concessions made to overcome the obstacles posed by the Yemeni government.

Al-Zubaidi affirmed that the southern military forces began pulling out from their positions in Abyan then the withdrawal will continue to include Shabwa, adding that this process will be followed by political steps with a view to speeding up the the implementation of the Saudi-brokered deal.

He reiterated the STC's keenness to fully implement the agreement and to stand against all odds and difficulties in order to avoid the ravages of war, make peace, start building and improve the quality of services for the people.

The UN official affirmed that the Riyadh Agreement made the STC, not only a legitimate representative of the South in any negotiations on Yemen future, but also a partner in ruling the state and its institutions.

He stressed the need of the implementation of the agreement to facilitate the UN efforts in the peace process and finding a comprehensive solution to the crisis in Yemen.

Saudi Arabia hosted indirect talks between the two sides, resulting in the power-sharing pact, officially called the “Riyadh Agreement” which also grants the STC legitimacy as a representative of the southern cause in international forums.
