The UAE reiterated that its main goal in Yemen is to restore the power of the Yemeni state and the legitimate government following the Al Houthi coup. The UAE and Saudi Arabia share identical views about their main goal of restoring the internationally recognised government’s legitimacy, Dr. Anwar Gargash, UAE Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, said in an interview with the London-based Asharq Al Awsat.
Gargash reaffirmed the UAE’s full support for the Jeddah peace talks between Yemeni parties to unify all domestic fronts. He underlined the UAE’s strong confidence in Saudi Arabia’s ability to manage the peace talks.
“The ultimate goal is ending the war in Yemen, but this should be associated with providing safe surroundings for the entire region,” Gargash said. “There is agreement and consensus on the shared strategic vision between the UAE and Saudi Arabia, which is leading the Arab Coalition in Yemen.”
The minister reiterated that the UAE is committed to Yemenis “making their own choices”.
Gargash said: “We hope the Jeddah talks help restore solidarity and unity among Yemenis, because the key goal is to restore the state and its institutions, so that there are no strategic changes in the region, and there is no power vacuum for any terrorist groups to take advantage. The UAE is part of the Coalition, and we believe that ending the war in Yemen should not be just for the sake of ending the war, but should be linked to providing a strategic climate for stability and security in the region,” Gargash said.
