Member of the Presidency of the Southern Transitional Council, Lutfi Shatara revealed that a significant Mauritanian role to resolve the southern issue had been screwed up during Yemen's National Dialogue Conference (NDC) held in early 2012 in Sana'a.

Shatara wrote on his official Twitter account that "the southerner team and I met with the former Mauritanian Foreign Minister and current mediator in the Sudan crisis, Dr. Mohamed El Hassan in Sana'a during the NDC sessions. The man came with an acceptable gradual formula to resolve the southern issue."

"The man's task was screwed up due to northern mentality that does not even admit that the southern issue exists." Shatara added, concluding his tweet by saying this is how they (Northerners) lost the South.
